Welgama Family
Lakmani Welgama (nee) Ratwatte and Nimal Welgama own and oversee the operations of Upali Newspapers (Pvt) Limited. Lakmani is the daughter of the late Dr. Seevali Ratwatte, who served as the Chairperson of the Upali Group of newspapers and was also the brother of former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. At present, Lakmani owns 90.52 percent of the company. Meanwhile, her husband Nimal Welgama serves as the Managing Director. Prior to being promoted as the Managing Director at Upali Newspapers (Pvt) Limited, Nimal Welgama served as a staff member under Upali Wijewardene. He has also served as the Chairperson of Sri Lanka Telecom from 2011 to 2014 and the Monetary Board of Sri Lanka. Parliamentary Member Kumara Welgama is Nimal Welgama's brother.
